Want to speed up the time it takes for money to fly magically from your wallet to retail chains up and down your generic looking high street? Barclays have flow to your rescue with the PayTag, a small sticker that you can attach to the back of your smartphone to enable NFC payments.

Available at no cost (damn right) you need to be one of the chosen many with a Barclaycard Visa. Less prevalent are spots where I can make payments – currently my local Waitrose and Pret a Manger.

Visa predicts that the number of contactless point-of-sale terminals in the UK will rise by 50% to 150,000 this year. Major retailers that offer, or are introducing, contactless include Waitrose, McDonalds, Boots, WH Smith and Tesco. By the end of 2012, London buses will also accept contactless payments, followed by the Tube and the rest of the transport network in the Capital in 2013.

I have a PayTag on the way so you can chart my rapid descent into poverty over the next few weeks.
