If SITA are to be believed nearly 26 million bags go missing each year from airports around the world. I’ve lost a book on a holiday (a pirate copy of Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers that I bought on the streets of Mumbai in 2009) and that made me panic so I can only imagine how distressing a whole suitcase would be.
Technology, as ever, is ready to step in with a solution, this time in the form of the Trakdot Luggage tracker, which fits into a checked bag and reports airport location in real time to any mobile, Apple, Android, or SMS capable devices.
Trakdot is a palm-sized global positioning tracker that is ultra-light and fits easily into any size bag. The luggage locator system utilises GPS technology to deliver city-specific information on the whereabouts of checked baggage in real time.
Once the device is registered on the Trakdot website and placed inside a checked bag, it will deliver location information directly to you via text or email. There’s also a website and app. An additional benefit of the app is that it can alert you when your bag is coming on the carousel – so it’s handy even when your bag makes it to you.
Trakdot is currently taking CES by storm and is available March 2013 for £49.99 MSRP and an annual service fee of £12.99.
