I have a number of smart lightbulbs dotted about the house and the Playbulb is nice complement to this ensemble. It’s ridiculously easy to set up – pop in batteries and download and app. This is handy as it’s not something you’d tolerate stressing over – its very much on the nice to have side of the technological fence. The app is also easy to use, and walks you through simple usage on startup.

For something as small and as simple as a candle there is a reasonably long feature list. You can control when the candle come on and there’s also a sleep timer so you don’t need to worry about switching it off. As there’s an integrated sensor you can also just blow it out like a regular candle, which is a cool.

Playbulb Candle

There are a range of colours on board and you have a degree of control over brightness (although it is still fundamentally a candle so it will purposefully be dim). There’s an FX section where you can adjust how it cycles through colours – you can pick a steady blue glow for example or you can have a constantly changing flash of colour. In the FX section there’s also the classic candle flickering effect. You can adjust the speed to taste – it won’t ever look just like a real candle – but it will be close enough that you’d have to be a real jerk to complain about it.

If you have multiple Playbulbs you can easily group them with the app so you can coordinate colours, or have them all fade out at the same time. Mipow recommend groups of 5. And in the ultimate display of humility, you can even flip the Playbulb and use it as a regular candle holder.
